Money & Budgeting by Stephen Leppan

1. Carolyn de Reuck

Today’s workshop on money management and budgeting was incredibly informative! I feel that I have learnt a great amount and have been inspired and motivated to finally put my plans and talk about saving and investing into action. I have been meaning to open a savings account for quite a few months now, but hadn’t done anything about it... until today – I have already enthusiastically been ‘google-ing’ and researching different options. I feel so fortunate to have been able to attend such a relevant workshop on a topic as important as this, allowing me to now hopefully begin effectively saving for the future. And it wasn’t only the content of this workshop that was excellent, but the style and structure of the session was also great – I specifically enjoyed the discussion times in between where we could divide into smaller groups to brainstorm different concepts and ideas. All in all it was a wonderful workshop, and one that I would highly recommend for others in the future!

2. Darren Atwood

I found the workshop to be very informative and interesting.
it showed me the true value of managing money correctly
I would strongly recommend this workshop.
I cannot wait for the hardcover book to come out.

3. Neasa May

I really had an amazing time at the workshop I learned so much I went to the workshop knowing it I will learn a lot I was so excited and the workshop really lived up to my expectations.I loved the quote "tell your money where to go Instead of wondering where it went" and I will really use all the information I got to my own benefit! I'm excited to start saving.

I have learned so many new useful tips and I will really use all of them. Stephen had a different approach and presented the workshop differently than other financial planning workshops- we could all really take a lot from the workshop and apply it And the brilliant thing he taught us Is that we can start saving today already we don't have to wait for 5 years or so(cause we all tend to think its too early to start saving for the future) But we should start saving immediately

The workshop on finance was great, as it made us think about all that is has to do with money. I loved the presentation because it was simple and understandable, and we had to work as team/group of 4-5. Attempting to answer the questions, what is money and where we think money comes from was such an experience. And my team/group was the bomb and working together was a great way to reconnect for the year, and we were able to share laughs, thoughts and also just being around the ECHO team was an experience. The tools provided were simple to use and they will be of great help for usage in the future.

5. Rodney Belchem:

I felt that all the info from start to end was relevant to us as students and young people. I personally learnt a lot about finances and the planning that goes into it. The info of the workshop would make a great difference in our lives as we enter the working environment.

With my allowance, I would put the 10% “rule” straight into action. I would from this stage gear myself to stay away from living on credit. The investment schemes available to us at our financial levels interested me, and I am keen on pursuing them. I recommend the workshop to all people who want financial freedom and this should be taught at a young age. It would be great for high school pupils.

Another workshop solely on shares and investments would be a great platform for the students, especially after the interest shown by all of us on Saturday.

6. Tracy-Lee Arendse:

I found the financial workshop very interesting and appreciated the new take on money matters that Stephan had. I am not the kind of person who likes to think too much about finances but I am very conscious about the way I spend my money and I would like to think I am very responsible when it comes to budgeting. I have learnt that looking after your money does not only include watching how you spend it but also finding ways to allow your money to make you some more.

I am very interested in learning more about how to invest in shares but feel that i cannot take the risk on my own. I think it would be wonderful to have a session on investment. It has never really been an interest of mine but I think that that was because I know so little about investing. I believe it is important to keep updated on what's happening in the world and to expose yourself to many other options that you would not have thought of on your own.

7. Tankiso Awu:

The workshop was relevant in terms of knowing where do we spend our money and as Mr Stephen said we are slave regardless with the Debts for example the clothing accounts, cell phones and other unnecessary material which we normally pay at the end of every month, and money can run out of our pocket if we don’t have management tools and time. The thing that stood out for me was the breaking free from financial bondage which mainly show in details where our money goes and also the pie graph that illustrate the fixed amount, variable amount, waste, reward and wealthy, and the other thing that I really like was the group work whereby we define “what is money?”, well no one got it right but well every opinion was on the right track. The correct definition was: Money is the money making tool, more bees more honey (by Stephen) and it’s the risk taking with great reward. In future I would apply this now in my ECHO monthly budget so that I will get used on it when am working.

Well I would say that the management workshop is the tool that needs me to apply now currently and in future and it’s the road of being a millionaire one day.

Thanks to Mr Stephen Leppan

I have learn a lot from the workshop, as from now on I will be a different person with money about money and respect for money will never be the same again

9. Leonie Kokaan

Awesome productive echo workshop

The workshop with Stephen was really a very inspiring one for me. First and fore most I am not a person for economics, although I have it this year as a subject, I was introduced to the way we see and work with money differently. It made sensitive when I came home and thought about the way I spend money, and what I think is money and whether I can handle money in a positive way.

Being introduced to a budget and to see where you spend your money and as he said that a budget is their so that you can sit and understand for yourself the way you work with money and how you are forming part of debt and as young people we must learn to buy things in cash and not on credit cards and we also learn the value of money and we also learn to think twice before we spend money. The workshop was very informing and I surely learned to spend my money wisely but also to work like a bee to get money, because if you want to make money you have to have money. Money makes money

10. Annette Hubsch:

I just want to thank you out of the bottom of my heart. I was so tired Saturday morning, but from the start you tickle my brain and I enjoyed every minute. I want to know more, please!!! I immediately told my mom about all the errors she made and what she must do to start saving to buy her own flat. I want to thank you again also for the book and the programme. I realize it is a very valuable present we received and I give you my word I wont give it out.

11. Marquin Arendse:

I really enjoyed both workshops on Saturday and felt that i benefited greatly from them. The first workshop with Stephen really changed my ways of thinking about money and made me more self conscious about the way i spend it. I've realised to appreciate money a lot more and that saving is vital to having a better future. The budget planner we received will be of great assistance and will help me personally to better plan my money matters and how to save appropriately. Haven't got round to reading Stephen's book yet, but I am certainly looking forward to it! And think it'll expand our knowledge regarding money even more. Big thanks to Stephen!

12. Lauren Jansen

This workshop was a real eye opener for me. I now have a whole new way of looking at money, and not just as something to earn and spend. I think that this course was relevant to me because it has taught me to respect money as well as how to save wisely.

I have started reading Stephen’s book but I am too scared to do my budget intensely now, I am waiting until I have finished reading the book because then I know that I will have a solution to my “budgeting crisis”. I really enjoy the metaphor of money being a bee which goes and collects money (or honey) for you, if you use it well.

I plan on saving 10% (per month) of any income that I earn by putting it in a bank account which I will name “wealth account” or another name which gives me a lot of motivation to put money in. I plan to break the chains of the past by changing my attitude towards money and respecting it.

I would recommend this workshop to everyone because I don’t think that people realise the importance of respecting money enough. I want to thank Stephen Leppan for sharing his knowledge and his book of wisdom. I really enjoyed his workshop and I am inspired to finish reading his book and put my plans to the test.

13. Mandisa Ndzule

I heard a great day on the workshop, enjoyed every moment of it, the budget helped me alot because was not doing a budget at first but now i do. Did not know saving was so important and it can help me in the future, does not matter how much you

put aside or save monthly basis but what matter is, do you put money aside for the future. i really learned a lot and will apply it in my daily life as from now on. I would recommend such a workshop because most people can benefit from it, no let not say can, and they do benefit from it. Money can be defined in many ways, it was so interesting for me how money became money ,how it all started and that money is this magnificent paper that can transform one’s life. As I have a clothing account and thought it was the solution but Stephen changed ma thinking that having credit is not a solution but paying them off and buying cash is because I spend less when using cash and more when using a card reason being I don't see the money going while using cash i do and it limit the spending. i really learned a lot. Just want to thank Echo for organising us such a great workshop and Stephen for his time. I really enjoyed it.

14. Wilton Phillips

I really enjoyed both workshops because I walked out with new found knowledge and something to think about.

Stephen Leppan offered an interesting talk about money and the management thereof which was an eye opener. It was good to hear some investment management terminology and seeing the approach Stephen used in presenting the concept of wealth management to us. The budgeting software and the e-book we received have created a basis to start managing money more effectively.

Recommendation

Warren Buffett started investing when he was twelve years old and still today he states that he started investing too late in his life.

With that said I think this workshop provides a wonderful exposure to us ECHO members as it evokes an awareness of the various investment possibilities.

I think investment management is a great topic to discuss in a workshop because it is something that is not often talked about or exposed in many communities.

15. Yuche Jacobs

The workshop was very empowering and really made me aware of how important wise money management is in this current day and age.

Furthermore, it was most interesting to see how saving 10% each month could really set me up for economic success in the future. I already committed myself to start saving from the beginning of March this year.

I'm also looking forward towards our next workshop with Mr Leppan regarding investment.

16. Robin Jullies:

The workshop on how to manage money was very informative, especially the part on what money actually is and the investment part of the workshop and the ten percent saving, I have already started that, I guess its a bit tough in the beginning, because there a spot every sent has to fill, so now I have to make due with a little less but I’m sure I‘ll get use to it.

17. Bianca Bok:

I really have had difficulty with budgeting my money well and it was very useful to learn new ways to handle my money especially the one about opening a fashion fund instead of an account because now I know how I can save money on things I like!

How I will use this information

I will use the information to help my self understand the financial world and learn to grow my money more instead of spending it.

Would I recommend this workshop

Yes, I will I think it would have benefited my parents as well because i was so excited to inform them about the session when i got back home.

Anything else I would like to share

I just want to say thank you because i do not think anywhere else a organisation will offer such vital information like this, so now I can start using my money wisely.

What a great and wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Echo family!!

On Saturday we had a workshop on Money and Budgeting, the workshop was very informative and motivating especially to money-related matters which is something I never took serious before. I learnt so much and I enjoyed the way we were grouped so that we could share ideas, which is part of a learning experience. Mr Stephen, who was doing the presentation also generously gave us copies of his book and offered to help with any queries we might have. He encouraged us to invest as early as possible and he also raised the concept of 'Money makes Money' which left me with different views about money. After the workshop we had lunch, which was awesome and I also got a chance to meet some of the Echo students, my coach Pam and my buddy Carolyn.
